renting their home for $15.00 a month, and did not have a radio set. John was a conductor for
the steam railroad. Their children were Louise, 15, Elizabeth 10, and John Jr., 7.
Elizabeth and John attended school. They had a boarder, James Stewartson, 33, a millwright
for a fertilizer plant.
In the 1940 U.S. census, Thomas Ballenger, 44, and his wife Julia Ballenger, 43, were living on
Powaton Street, Alexandria, Alexandria City, Virginia. This was the same house as in 1935,
which they were renting for $25.00 a month. Thomas was a conductor for the steam
railroad. They both had completed 6 years of school. Their only child at home was John, 17,

in apartments.
John Thomas Ballenger, 64, died 26 Jan 1960 in the District Nursing Home, Warrenton, Fairview,
Virginia, where he had resided for 20 days. Cause of death was heart failue due to a
Cerebral hemorrhage. At the time of his death his usual residence was 7113 Healy Dr., 129,
Springfield, Fairfax, Virginia. He was buried 28 Jan 1960 in the Columbia Gardens Cemetery,
Arlington, Virginia.
Julia Ballenger, 78, died 8 Sep 1974 in the Alexandria Hospital, Alexandria, Virginia. Cause of
