Notes: Dorthea Hansen was born 12 Dec 1866 in Kóng, Båg, Odense, Denmark.
She was the daughter of Hans Johansen and Karen Kirstine Jensen. The couple
was not married, and nothing more is known about her mother. Dorthea was baptised
26 Dec 1866 in Kóng parish. In the 1870 Danish census, Dorthea, age 3, was living with her paternal grandparents, Johan Jørgensen and Dorthe Hansdatter in Søllested, Odense, Denmark. Also in the household was Jørgen Johansen, her uncle. Her father was not listed. This is probably when he was living in the United States. In the 1880 Danish census, Dorthea, age 13, was living with her father Hans Johansen, grandfather Jørgen Jorgensen, and a housekeeper Anne Kirstine Jakobsen, in Søllested. Dorthea was confirmed 24 Apr 1881 in Søllested. On 10 Sep 1881, her father Hans married Maren Rasmusdatter. The couple had 13 children, half-brothers and half-sisters to Dorthea.
In the 1890 Danish census, Dorthea, age 23, was most likely living in Veflinge sogn,
Veflinge, Skovbt, Odense. According to census records, Dorthea immigrated to the
United States in 1891. The most probable passenger list record is for a Dorothea Hansen,
age 23, leaving Hamburg 19 Oct 1890, in steerage, aboard the S.S. Wieland bound for
New York. Her residence was Veflinge, Denmark. Dorthea later became a naturalized
citizen. Dorthea married Christian Hansen Møller on 17 Dec 1892, in St. Stephan's Danish Lutheran Church in Perth Amboy, Middlesex, New Jersey. In the 1900 U.S. census, Dorthea and Christian were living at 237 Washington Street, Perth Amboy. They had four sons - Hans, age 6, Alfred, age 5, Christian, age 3, and Peter, age 1 year. Christian was a brakeman for the Lehigh Valley Railroad. The census record leaves blank the questions whether Dorthea could yet read, write, or speak English. By the 1910 U.S. census, Dorthea and Christian had moved a block to 315 Washington Street, Perth Amboy, pictured at right, which became their long time home. Dorthea had had another son, named Harold, who was just 6 years old. Alfred, age 15, was not listed as he was living with his uncle, Hans Nielsen Miller. In late 1917 or early 1918, Dorthea had a nervous breakdown. There are two letters written by her from the State Hospital, Trenton, New Jersey, to her son Peter, dated 16 Jan 1918 and 24 Jan 1918. The letters describe her room and visitors, and when her various sons will or have visited. In Nov 1918, her son Peter married Evelyn Baldwin. In the 1920 U.S. census, Dorthea is back at home with Christian, but only their sons Christian and Harold were living with them. Christian was a fireman for the copper works, and Harold, at age 16, was a clerk in a bank. In the 1930 U.S. census, a couple, Tice and Mary Bowman were renting a room in their home. In the 1940 U.S. census, Antonio Lamberti, age 63, his wife Landi, age 60, and daughter Dorothy, age were renting rooms from Christian and Dorothea for $35. a month. The family had been living there in 1935 Christian and Dorthea celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on 17 Dec 1942 with family and friends in their own home. Christian died 14 May 1944. Following his death, Dorthea went to live with her youngest son, Harold, in West Lawn, Pennsylvania. She wrote often to her son Peter Miller and his wife Evelyn. On 14 Sep 1948, she fell down a flight of stairs in the early morning hours, and was hospitalized with a broken right femur. She died 24 Sep 1948. Both she and her husband are buried in Alpine Cemetery, Perth Amboy, New Jersey.
