Notes:  Emma Wilhelmina Hildebrand was born 14 Sep 1871 in Santa Clara, Utah.  Her parents were Charles and Wilhelmina Hildebrand.  She had one older sister, Rachel, born in 1869.  Three more sisters were born in Santa Clara.  They were Tilda, born in 1893, Julia, born in 1877, and Dora, born in 1879.  In 1879, the family fled the Mormon community by wagons, with armed guards.  They settled in Alhambra, California.

In the 1880 U.S. census, Emma was living with her family on Wilson Avenue, San Gabriel Twp. (Alhambra).  Her father, Charles, 40, was a farmer, and her mother Meana, 30, was keeping house.  The children were Seline, 11, Anna, 9, Tilda, 7, Julia, 5, and Dora G., 1.  Her brother Charles was born in 1881, followed by sisters Caroline, born in 1884, and Alice, born in 1886.
Emma Wilhelmina Hildebrand, Dion H. Romandy, Gounod Romandy Emma married Dionys Heberling Romandy on 6 Mar 1892 in Los Angeles County, California.  They lived in San Diego County, California for a while.  Their first son Gounod was born in Coronado, San Diego County on 18 Apr 1893.  Emma, Dion, and baby Gounod Romandy are seen in the photograph at right in 1894

Their son Dion was born 10 Feb 1895 in Alhambra, Los Angeles County.  Emma's husband Dionys died 3 Jan 1899, leaving her a widow at the age of 27 years.  She supported herself and her two sons as a piano music teacher.

In the 1900 U.S. census, Emma, 27, was living at 1013 Wall Street, Los Angeles.  This was her long time family residence, which she lived in until sometime after 1940.  She held the home free of mortgage and taught her music pupils in her home.  Her sons were Gounod, 7, and Dion, 5.  In 1905 the Los Angeles Times noted that Emma was also a composer, some of her pieces were to be played by Sousa's band.  Several of her efforts were played by the Ellery band in 1904.

In the 1910 U.S. census, Emma, 37, Gounod, 17, and Dion, 15, were all still living on Wall St.  As the Los Angeles Times noted, in October and December of 1914, Emma and her two young sons, both violinists, played for the Wednesday Afternoon Club of Alhambra.

By the 1920 U.S. census, Gounod had married, and Emma, 45, and Dion, 24, a theater musician, remained in the home.  Dion married shortly after the census was taken.  In the Voter Registration records, Emma usually registered as a Republican.

Emma is not found in the 1930 U.S. census.  In the 1940 U.S. census, Emma, 69, is still in her Wall Street home.  She had completed 8th grade, was no longer teaching, but had other income.  Enumerated with her was a lodger, Robert Rippet, 35, a merchant marine sailor.  In the 1950 U.S. census, Emma W., 78, was living in the home of her sister Julia Patten, 70, at 103 N. Stoneman Avenue, Alhambra.

Emma died 24 Jul 1961, age 89, still living in the Stoneman home.  Private funeral services were conducted on Wednesday, 26 Jul 1961 at the Pierce Brothers-Fred A. Turner Chapel in Alhambra.  She is buried alongside her husband in the San Gabriel Cemetery, San Gabriel.  Her son Gounod had preceded her in death, and is buried there also.  When she died she left a son, four sisters, three grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
