Notes: Henry C. Detwiller was born 19 Jun 1841 in Fullarton Twp., Perth, Ontario. His parents were Christian Detwiller and Marian Campbell, and he was the fourth of nine children. He grew up on the family farm in the Fullarton Township. In the 1861 Canada census he was listed as a laborer, but by the 1871 Canada census he was listed as a farmer. When he registered his marriage in 1871, he listed himself as an agriculturalist. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
At age 30, Henry married Mathilda Moore on 8 Jun 1870 in Fullarton Twp., Perth.
Their first child was born in 1871 and died four days later. Their eighth child
was born 20 years later, in 1891. In 1882,
Henry traveled to Griggs County, North Dakota, by way of Port Huron. He filed a
premption claim in Tyrol Township, #147 R 59, Sec, 14,
7 miles north of Cooperstown. He returned to Ontario in 1884,
and took his family to North Dakota in 1885. The local newspaper noted that while
he was back in Ontario, the family had the misfortune of a barn fire. He bacame a naturalized U.S. citizen 26 Sep 1890. The 1900 U.S. census shows him living with his wife, four sons, and a servant in Tyrol Twp., Griggs, North Dakota. Although Henry grew up as a Presbyterian, he later became a member of the Congregational Church. He died 1 Dec 1900, at the age of 59. Funeral services were held at the Congregational Church in Cooperstown on Monday, December 3, 1900. He is buried in the Cooperstown Cemetery, Cooperstown, North Dakota. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
