Notes: This was the long time residence of the Christian Detwiller family in Perth County.
In the 1861 census, Alexander Detwiller is shown farming part of Lot 31 and Christian
farming the other part. In 1863, Alexander Detwiller
and Christian Detwiller bought 160 acres of land from the
Canada Company, described as Township of Fullarton, Lot No. 31 in the E. of M.Rd
Concession. Christian bought the East 90 acres, and Alexander the West 70
acres. Both were mortgaged. In 1864, Alexander deeded his West 70 acres
to Rebecca Parker for $1,900. Christian mortgaged, his East 90 acres, repaid
when crops came in, remortgaged, and repaid, etc., over the many years of farming.
In 1879, the Perth County Atlas showed Christian owning 90 acres, Conc. EMR, Lot 31.
He was a farmer with stock and grain. The Post Office was Motherwell. On 13
Feb 1891, Christian gifted his East 90 acres to his son Andrew Detwiller.
The deed was registered 11 May 1891, after the death of Christian. Upon Andrew's
death in 1901, it went to his wife Jane. By 1902, it was out of the family's
hands. |
