Notes: Bertha Fischer was born 19 Dec 1890 in Warrick County, Indiana. Her parents were Charles A. Fischer and Allie (or Ollie) E. Purdue. In the 1900 U.S. census, her family was living in Anderson Twp., Warrick, Indiana. Her father Chas A. Fischer, 44, born in Indiana, was a farmer. Her mother Ollie E. Fischer, 33, born in Indiana, had had three children, all living, all born in Indiana. These were Bertha L., 9, Aaron U., 5, and Edith M., 3 years. Living with the family was Ollie's father, Samuel L. Purdue, 66, a landlord. and Amos Barnett, 27, a farm laborer.
Bertha married Frank M. Hunt on 24 Feb 1910 in Vanderburg County, Indiana. In the
1910 U.S. census, Bertha, 19, and Frank, 23, were living at 714 Peach Street, Rockford,
Winnebago, Illinois. Frank was working as a salesman for a "10¢ store".
They were lodgers with the Atkinson family. Charles Atkinson, 62, and his wife Urzilla,
58, were not working. Their son Frank, 35, was a machinist for a pump manufacturer, and
his wife Rose, 25, was a saleslady for a millinery shop. In the 1920 U.S. census, Bertha, 29, and Frank, 33, were living on Brookside Avenue in Edina, Hennepin, Minnesota. Frank was a salesman. Their son Charles, 5, had been born in Indiana. In the 1930 U.S. census, Bertha S., 39, and Frank M., 43, were living at 7 S. Hidalgo Street in Alhambra, Los Angeles, California. They were renting for $30. per month and had a radio. They had two sons, Charles G., 16, and William S., 5. Bertha was the operator of a beauty shop, and Frank was a clerk in a drug store. Frank died in 1931. Bertha married Thomas J. Ferrell, also a widower, on 26 Jun 1937 in Covina, Los Angeles, California. She moved into his home at 121 S. Granada, Alhambra, California. She was the owner and operator of the Hidalgo Beauty Shop at 11 S. Hildalgo Avenue in Alhambra. In the 1940 U.S. census, Bertha and Thomas were living at 121 S. Granada Street, along with their two 15 year old sons from their prior marriages. Bertha had 1 year of college, was a beauty operator. Thomas died 8 Dec 1940, at the age of 55, while Bertha was age 50. She is registered to vote in 1946, as a Democrat. She continued running her beauty shop, as evidenced by the phone directories of 1954 and 1956. Polk's Alhambra City Directory 1964 finally lists her as "Bertha H(wid Thos J) retd, h 121 S Granada". That Bertha continued to live in the home that had been bought for Thomas and his former wife Mabel W. Olson by her parents, was a sore point for the Olson family. On behalf of Bertha, one of Thomas' sons explains that she used her savings to pay back taxes to save the house from foreclosure, and also used her funds to restore and remodel the house. Bertha died 1 Feb 1973, at the age of 83, presumably still in Alhambra. She is buried with her first husband, Frank M. Hunt, in the San Gabriel Cemetery, San Gabriel, California.
