Notes: Floyd Albert Donelson was born 28 Jan 1905 in Jamestown, Chautauqua, New York. His parents were Henry Albert Donelson and Flora Garfield. His mother died in 1907. In the 1910 U.S. census, Floyd was living with his father at 75 Barrett Avenue, Jamestown. His maternal grandmother, Ella Garfield, was head of the household, that also included her son Joseph Garfield and father Wm. Northrup. Floyd's father was the head of the Donelson Trucking and Storage Company, Inc. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
In the 1915 New York State census, Floyd was 10 years old and living at 75 Barrett Avenue,
Jamestown, with his father H. Albert and step-mother Annie. In the 1920 U.S.
census, the family had moved to 69 Barrett Avenue. In the 1925 New York State
census, the family is still at 69 Barrett Avenue, and Floyd is listed as a college
student. In the 1926 Jamestown City Directory, Floyd is listed as a
student, and in 1928 as a clerk. Floyd attended the University of Syracuse, Syracuse, New York. In the 1925 yearbook, the Onondagan, he is listed a a member of the Freshman Executive Committe, and a Sigma Chi pledge. In 1927, he was on the Junior Executive Committee, and the Interfraternity Athletic Association, where he was the Bowling Sports Manager. In 1928, his senior year, he was still a Sigma Chi member, and a member of the Sigma Beta Chi Honorary and Professional Transportation Fraternity, which had been established at Syracuse University in 1924. Floyd was also mention in the local Syracuse Herald as being on the cross country and golf teams. Floyd married Grace Marion Rushworth on 29 Nov 1929 in her parent's home in Jamestown, New York. In the 1930 Jamestown City Directory, they are listed at 49 Cameo Apts., Jamestown. He was Sec.-Asst.Treas. of the Donelson Trucking & Storage Co., Inc., of which his father H. Albert Donelson was Pres.-Treas., and his uncle Edward J. Donelson V-Pres. The company was located at 33 Forest Avenue, Jamestown. The company advertised "Moving, Trucking, Packing, Shipping, Strictly Fireproof Storage Warehouses". In 1932, Floyd and Grace were living at 317 Hazard , Jamestown, and in 1934 at 75 Barrett. This was the same residence that Floyd had lived at as a child. Their son John Garfield Donelson was born 29 January 1936 in Jamestown. In the 1940 U.S. census, the family is found at 75 Barrett Avenue. Floyd had completed 4 years of college, the family was renting the house for $15.00 a month, he had worked 52 weeks during the last year, earning $1,500., and he had other income. The photograph of Floyd and his son below, was taken in front of the Farm Bureau office, whose sign has a Donelson name on it. In the 1946, the Jamestown City Directory lists Floyd and Grace as living at 69 Barrett Avenue, with his father. H. Albert's wife is no longer listed, and presumed to have died. In the 1953 Jamestown City Directory, Floyd is listed as President of the company, with Grace as Secretary. His father is presumed to have died. Floyd's wife Grace died 30 May 1992 in Jamestown, New York. Floyd moved to 54 Halford Drive, Atlanta, Georgia, the residence of his son John Garfield Donelson. Floyd died 12 Jun 1993. One family source places his death in Westfield, New York. However, his last residence according to the Social Security Death Index is Atlanta, Georgia.
