Notes: William Henry Detwiller was born 31 Mar 1924 in Tyrol Twp., Griggs, North Dakota. He
was the second child of Harry Russel Detwiller and Lillian Ellen Williams. He had an older sister,
Mary Evelyn, born in 1921. In the 1925 North Dakota census, his father was farming on the original
Detwiller family farm, 7 miles north of Cooperstown in Tyrol Twp., Griggs County. By the 1930 U.S.
census, Catherine Eileen, born in 1926 and Patrick Roger, 1929, were included in the family.
The family was still together in the 1940 U.S. census. William had four years of high school. William enlisted in the U.S. Army on 29 Nov 1945 at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. He served in the U.S. Army of Occupations in Japan and Korea, and was discharged 14 Feb 1947. He returned to Coopersville, where he was employed, and then owned and operated a Standard Oil bulk dealership. He also owned and operated Bill's Standard Service Station for many years. William married Betty Knapp on 15 Jun 1951. The couple had a son and a daughter. William died 5 May 1987 in Cooperstown. The services were held at the Trinity Lutheran Church on 7 May 1987. He is buried in the Cooperstown Cemetery, Cooperstown, Griggs, North Dakota. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
