Notes: Richard Dion Romandy was born 30 May 1925 in Los Angeles, California. His parents were Dion Herberling Romandy and Frances M. Dow. His sister Lois Anne was born in 1929, and died 3 days later. In the 1930 U.S. census, Richard, 4, was living with his parents Dion, 35, and Frances, 36, at 916 Holt, Los Angeles. His father was playing violin in theaters. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
In the 1940 U.S. census, Richard, 14, was living with his family in Beverly Hills.
His father was working as a musician on radio. Richard was a Freshman at Beverly Hills
High School, and was a member of SPQR, the Latin Club. On 28 May 1943, two days before he turned 18, Richard enlisted in the U.S. Navy. On 9 Sep 1944, he was aboard the U.S.S. LCIL-809 at the amphibious training base (PhibTtaBase), Solomons, Maryland. The ship transited the Pacific Ocean via Pear Harbor, arriving at Purvis Bay, Solomon Islands in mid February. She provided bombardment support as well as patrol and escort services for the Okinawa Invasion. Richard boarded the U.S.S. Madea (AKA-31) on 11 Dec 1945. He was a 3rd Class Quartermaster. After the end of hostilities in August 1945, the ship carried occupation troops from the Phillioines to Japan, then began carrying troops home to the United States. On 26 Feb 1946, Richard was back in San Francisco, transferring off the ship, for a discharge in San Pedro, 5 Mar 1946. Richard registered for the World War II draft on 6 Mar 1946, after he was home and living with his parents at 200½ So. Rexford Dr., Beverly Hills. At age 20, he was described as 5'10". 150 lbs., light complexion, with brown hair and brown eyes. His occupation was "Veteran". Richard D. Romandy married Barbara L. Gilroy on 10 Sep 1948 in the Westwood Community Church, Los Angeles. They honeymooned in Carmel, Monterey and Santa Cruz. In the 1950 U.S. census, Richard D., 24, and Barbara L. 22, were living at 2514 26th Street, Santa Monica. Richard was a salesman for a wholesale auto parts company. The marriage was a short one. The 1950 voting records show him living back at 200½ So. Rexford Dr., and registered as a Republican. Richard D. Romandy, 32, married Derelys C. Murphy, 32, on 24 Aug 1956 in San Diego County, California. He died 23 Apr 1974 in San Diego County, his last residence being at 1754 Freda Lane, Cardiff by the Sea.
