Don and Fran had met about 1940 when both were choir members in the Church. When Fran was attending
Redlands University, Don would travel out to pick her up on the weekends, and bring her back to Alhambra.
As this was wartime, he always coasted down Kellogg's Hill to save gas. Their wedding was attended by 300 guests. Rev. Milton S. Weber, pastor of the church, and Rev. James Nelson of Garvalia Community Church, performed the candlelight ceremony. Fran's attendants were Viola Latimer, maid of honor, and bridesmaids Elizabeth Foree, Betty Jane Miller (Fran's cousin from New Jersey), Madge Neill Weber, and Mrs. Frank Richards. Ruth Miller was the flower girl. Don's best man was John Stewart, the organist and choir director. His ushers were Glen Gordon, Wilfred B. Miller, Robert A. Miller, and Frank Richards. A reception was held at the church. The couple spent their month-long honeymoon at the Olson family cabin in Mt. Baldy, California. Don and Fran's first home was at 1025 Edith Avenue, Alhambra. In Aug 1947, the house had become too small with their two daughters, Karen and Kristin, so they moved to 420 N. Second Street, Alhambra, Don's family home. Here they had five more children — Peter, Eric, Candace, David and James. In the 1950 U.S. census, Donald K. Olson, 43, and Frances D., 26, were living in the family home in Alhambra. Don was the proprietor of his "door factory". Their children were Karen L., 4, Kristin E., 3, Peter H., 1, and Eric R., 3 months. Family vacations were spent camping in Yosemite Nation Park, Morro Bay State Park and others. The children all attended Garfield Elementary School and Alhambra High School. In October 1969, Don and Fran celebrated their 25th Wedding Anniversary with a reception held in the Fireside Room of the Alhambra First Presbyterian Church. In 1980, Don and Fran moved to the retirement home they had built in Mt. Baldy, California. They celebrated their 40th Wedding Anniversary on 30 Sep 30 1984, with a reception at Karen's condo in Culver City. And finally, they celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on 1 Oct 1994, with a party at David's home in Arcadia. Don died 3 Mar 1996 in Alhambra, California. Fran died 6 Jan 2013 in Pomona, California. Both are buried in Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, California. When Fran died, she was survived by 7 children, 16 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
