He was born in Washington , D.C., on the 23rd of March, 1869, and received his educational training in the public schools of that city. In 1889, when twenty years old, he went to Seattle, Washington, where he was connected with the banking business for a few years, and in 1892 located in Alhambra, California. He became chief clerk in the supply department of the Los Angeles Terminal Railroad, which ran from Monrovia to San Pedro and was later taken over by the Salt Lake Railroad. Subsequently Mr. Hilton bought the franchise of the subscription department of the Los Angeles Times for the Alhambra district, which he handled with marked financial success for ten years and then sold, since which time he has devoted his attention mainly to his property interests in this locality. In 1908 Mr. Hilton was united in marriage to Miss Sophie Hildebrand, who was born in Utah, and whose father, now deceased, was a native of Switzerland and was a pioneer settler of Alhambra, having located here in the 70's. He engaged in ranching and became a large landowner. The greater part of his land was devoted to vineyards and fruits. Mr. Hilton has always supported the democratic party and has been active in local public affairs. He served as a member of the board of city trustees from 1906 to 1910, during which period he was the head of public safety. At the same time he served as chief of the fire department. Alhambra was the first town on the Pacific Coast to have a self-propelled fire apparatus, which was built in Alhambra. Mr. Hilton served as city manager of Alhambra during 1918-19 and gave an able, businesslike and satisfactory administration. He is a member of Alhambra Lodge, No. 1328, B. P. O. E., and has given his earnest support to all movements calculated to promote the best interests of his city. He has built and owns a number of residences here; is in very comfortable financial circumstances and is regarded as one of Alhambra's substantial and reliable citizens. |
