Funeral held for John Detwiller. Griggs county man succumbs Sunday from heart failure Sept. 21, 1941. Funeral services for John Detwiller, 69, who came to Griggs Co. in 1886, were held in the Masonic Temple in this city (Cooperstown) Wednesday (24th) 2:00 with Rev. C.C. Converse delivering the sermon. Detwiller, well-known throughout the county, died suddenly Sunday at his farm home, 7 miles north of Cooperstown while leading a horse from the barn and through a pasture gate. Heart failure was the immediate cause of death, though he had been in declining health for nearly two years. He was born at St. Mary's. Ont. on Sept. 12. 1872, and came with the family to Griggs Co. as a lad of 14 years in 1886. He attended school in Ont. and Dakota territory. On Feb 16, 1904, he was married to Gertrude Idalette Sherman at Seymour, Wis. A farmer throughout his life, he was active in community affairs. He was president of the Farmers Elevator at Jessie, a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Knights of Pythias and the Pres. church of Cooperstown. He is survived by Mrs. Detwiller, a sister, Mrs. Robert Pratt and a brother, Harry Detwiller. |
