Herbert Pyne Ungricht, M.D., age 86, of Salt Lake City, Utah, passed away peacefully
on March 14, 2004, surrounded by his loving family.
Herb was born September 21, 1917 in Sunnyside, Utah to
John and Lillie Arrowsmith Ungricht. His boyhood years were spent in Carbon County. He moved with
his family to East Millcreek in 1934, where he spent most of his life. Herb honorably served as a pilot
in the Army Air Corps in World War II, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He graduated from the
University of Utah and Yale University School of Medicine. While doing his medical internship in San
Francisco, he met his sweetheart, Barbara Robison. They were married in the
Salt Lake Temple on July 23, 1952. Herb practiced Ophthalmology full time in Salt Lake City well into his
82nd year. He generously volunteered time to teach Doctors-in-training at the University of Utah College
of Medicine. He was a skilled physician who earned the love and respect of both patients and colleagues.
Herb was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving faithfully in many callings
throughout his life. He had incredible faith and a deep testimony of his Savior Jesus Christ. He
freely gave to his family, neighbors, and patients. He spent the past 4 years selflessly caring for his
dear wife Barbara. He was an amazing example of devotion, service, self-reliance, and hard work.
"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith."
Herb is survived by his wife, Barbara, East Millcreek; their children Herbert (Yvonne),
Sandy; Lillie Christiansen (Richard), Littleton, Colorado; Albert (Yvette), Elizabeth VanLeeuwen (Craig),
Susannah DeMill (Troy), and Benjamin (Margie), all East Millcreek. He is also survived by 28 grandchildren
and one great- grandson.

Thanks to the staff at Cottonwood Hospital for their care and tenderness with our father and family, and to his
many capable physicians throughout the years.
