Notes: Simeon and Bess bought the 458 Brown Street house at a bargain in about 1930.
This was a 3 bedroom, 1 bath, 1,200 square foot home built in about 1900.
For several years Simeon and Bess received income from Guique the Junk Man
who rented the house from them.
Just as Viola was ready for high school in 1934, Simeon and Bess moved their
family to the 458 Brown Street house. Viola walked two miles to high school
and carried her cello each day until she got a boyfriend to carry it for her.
The photo at the right shows Viola with Bill Leherman circa 1936.
During this time they turned the West Side Grocery into a restaurant:
the Green Lattern.
Simeon and Bess lived at 458 Brown Street until 1939 — about six years
total. Meanwhile Simeon was building their new
1615 F Street house on the vacant lot
next to the 1613 F Street house. |
