Notes: Edith Margaret Samuels was born 30 Oct 1885 in the Blue Ridge
mountain area of Napa, California, where her parents had a cattle ranch. She was the second of
seven children of George Washington Samuels and Lucy Mildred Coleman. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
In the 1900 U.S. census, Edith M. Samuels, 14, was living with her mother, Lucy, 35, on Blue Mountain, Knox Twp.,
Napa. Her father, George, 36, was living in Vacaville, Solano. The family was counted in both
places. Her siblings were Walter Samuels, 16, Alma C., 12, Bessie E., 10, Nora A., 8, Millie, 5, and
Gerna B., 2. Gerna Belle, died on 13 Nov 1900 at age 1 year and 4½ months. Her brother Osmond was
born about 1902. Edith attended the old Monticello School. The photograph at the left below shows
Edith circa 1904. Edith worked on the ranch until her parents decided to move in 1905 to 21 North Street in the town of Napa. Later she worked for the old Great Western Power Company. Edith married Clyde Archibald Land 8 Sep 1907 in Napa. The photograph at the right shows her in 1908. In 1913 Edith and her husband moved to Alberta, Canada, with their first three children. There they homesteaded land for six years. They returned to Napa County in 1920. The photograph at the left shows Edith during this period. Edith was registered as a Republican voter in Napa County in 1912 and from 1926 through 1944. Edith was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Napa for 60 years (she joined that Church on 1 Sep 1905) and was also a member of the Yountville Neighborhood Club. The photograph below shows her with her sisters and father circa 1942. Edith passed away in 1965 at age 79 after a long illness. During the last 28 years of her life she lived at the family home at 6392 St. Helena Highway, Yountville, California. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
