Notes: Otto John Martin was born 6 May 1909 in Vallejo, Solano, California. His parents were
Otto J. Martin and Bertha C. Rumble. He grew up in Vallejo with his older sister Pearl and
younger brothers William and Bert. In the 1910 U.S. Census, he was living with his parents Otto J., 30, and Bertha C., 24, at 200 Virginia Street, Vallejo. His father was the owner of a fruit stand. His sister Pearl was 2 years. In the 1920 U.S. census, Otto, 10, was living with his parents, Otto J., 43, and Bertha, 33, still on Virginia Street. His father was now the owner of a grocery store. From 1915 until 1921 Otto worked as a paper boy and earned from $7.00 to $28.00 per month.
From 1921 until February 1924 he worked as an usher at the Vallejo Theater and earned up to $11.50
per week. He then switched to the Virginia Theater and worked there until November 1928,
ending as an assistant manager. In the 1930 U.S. census, Otto John, 20, was an apprentice machinist working at the Mare Island Naval Yard. He was living with his parents, O.J., 52, and Bertha C., 43, at 521 Santa Clara Street, Vallejo. His father was listed as a merchant, and mother as a housewife. His siblings were Pearl M., 22, a public stenographer, William H., 16, and Bertrum E., 13. Otto announced his engagement to Leola Hancock at a party in their honor in July 1939. Leola was a resident of Napa, California. They were quietly married 6 Oct 1932 in the Presbyterian parsonage in Santa Rosa, Sonoma. They made their home in the City of Vallejo during their 51½ years of marriage. In the 1940 U.S. census, Otto J., Jr., 30, and Leola, 28, were living at 1469 Alabama St., Vallejo. Otto was a machinist in government work, had completed 4 years of high school, and had earned $3,300. Leola had completed one year of college. They owned their home, valued at $3,500, and had one child, John, 6. Otto John Martin, Jr., 31, registered for the World War II draft on 16 Oct 1940 in Vallejo. He was described as 5'11", 175 lbs., with light complexion, brown hair, and brown eyes. He was a U.S. Government industrial worker at Mare Island Navy Yard. In the 1950 U.S. census, Otto J., 40, and Leola, 38, were living at 15 La Vuelta, Vallejo. Martin continued as a machinist at Mare Island. Their children were John, 16, and Carolyn, 10. Their last residence was at 130 Dale Ct., Vallejo. Regarding his work history, Otto began working as an apprentice machinist in July 1928 at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, earning 25¢ per hour. He was promoted numerous times over his years of service there, and had the title Machinist Quarterman during his last 18 years. Otto retired in December 1964 after working 36½ years at the "yard". He worked on numerous ships (including nuclear submarines), was a supervisor, and went on sea trials. John died 20 Jan 1984 in Vallejo, Solano, California.
