Notes:  Mary Ann Jackson was born 26 Apr 1844 in Indiana, probably in Liberty Twp., Wells County.  She was the fourth of twelve children of Hiram Jackson and Mary Ann Logan.  According to Bess McFarren, her grandaughter, Mary Ann was one-fourth Cherokee, but there is no evidence to prove this.

In the 1850 U.S. census, Mary Ann Jackson, 6, was living with her parents, Hiram, 33, and Mary, 32, in Liberty Township, Wells, Indiana.  Her father was a farmer and his real estate was valued at $2,000.  Her siblings were Samuel, 8, Margaret 3, and Joseph L., 1.
In the 1860 U.S. census,Mary Ann Jackson, 16, was living with her parents, Hiram, 42, and Mary A., 41, in Liberty Twp., Wells, Post Office Bluffton.  Her father's real estate was valued at $3,500. and personal property valued at $700.  Her siblings were Samuel, 17, Margaret, 13, Joseph, 11, Nancy, 8, Hiram, 4, and Martha, 1.

Mary Ann Jackson married John McFarren on 23 Nov 1860 in Liberty Twp., Wells County, Indiana.  On 9 Jul 1864, there is a sale by John and Mary Ann McFarren of some land in Wells County, Township Twenty-six, North of Range Twelve East, for $500.  They moved briefly to Northern Missouri, then to Nebraska.

In the 1865 Nebraska census, Mary A. McFarren, 21, and her husband John, 24, were living in Otoe County, Nebraska.  Their children were Loiza (Louisa), 3, and Harriet, 1.  Mary and John again moved briefly to Missouri.

In the 1870 U.S. census, Mary "McFenni", 26, and her Husband John, 31, were living in Avoca Precinct, Cass, Nebraska.  The Post Office was Factoryville.  John was a farmer, and had a personal estate of $900.  Their children were Levisa (Louisa), 9, Harriet, 7, Franklin, 5, and Benjamin, 1.

In the 1880 U.S. census, Mary A. "McFerren", 36, keeping house, and her husband John, 39, a farmer, were living in Big Spring, Benton, Arkansas.  Their children at home were Harriet Z., 16, Geor F., 13, farm worker, Benjamin L., 11, farm worker, Della M., 8, Pheby J., 6, William H., 4, and Eddie W., 7 months.

In the 1900 U.S. census, Mary A. McFarren, 55, and her husband John, 59, a farmer, were living in the Noble Twp., Cleveland, Oklahoma.  Their children at home were Edward, a farmer laborer, and Theodore, 14, in school.  In Jan 1902, Mary Ann and John traveled back to Liberty Center, Wells, Indiana, for a Jackson family reunion.

In the 1910 U.S. census, Mary McFarren, 66, and her husband John, 69, were living in Red River Twp., Searcy, Arkansas.  It was in the Ozark National Forest Reserve.  John was farming on his own account, and they owned the farm free of mortgage.  In the household was a granddaughter, May McFarren, 12.

Mary and John moved to California about 1915.  Mary Ann McFarren died 7 Dec 1917 in Holtville, Imperial, California.  She is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery, El Centro, Imperial, California.
