Notes:   John McPherrin was born 15 Nov 1757, in Cumberland Twp., York (later Adams), Pennsylvania.  He was the seventh of nine children of John McFerrin and Martha Fisher.

According to a membership application to the Sons of the Anerican Revolution, dated 12 Aug 1924, his grandson Anderson McPherrin claimed John served as a Private in the Pennsylvania 5th Regiment under Capt. Arndt, Capt. Nelson, and Col. Geo. Taylor.  A John McFerrin enlisted on 18 Mar 1777 and is found in the muster rolls for 6 Sep 1777, 10 Oct 1777, and 26 Sep 1788.  However, this John may not be our John as his name is consistently spelled John McPherrin in all other known records.

John McPerrin graduated from Dickenson College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 1788, then studied theology under the direction of Rev. JohnClark.  He was ordained a Presbyterian minister on 22 Sep 1790, and became pastor of the Salem and Unity churches, Westmoreland County.

John McPherrin married Mary Stevenson, daughter of John Emory Stevenson and Mary Jane McComb, some time between 1786 and 1790.  Their first of nine children was born in 1790. In 1798, John McPherrin is listed in the United States Tax Lists for the State of Pennsylvania in Derry, Westmoreland County, as owning a log dwelling and kitchen, with a stone spring house.  In the 1800 U.S. census, John McPherrin is listed in Derry, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania.  In 1805, the Rev. John McPherrin organized the church in Harmony, five miles north of Butler.  A Land Warrant is found for Rev. John McPherrin for 380 acres in Butler on 12 Sep 1806.

In the 1810 U.S. census, J. McPherin is listed in Center, Butler, Pennsylvania. . Only age-ranges were listed, but the household included his wife, Mary; sons John, Samuel, William, Clark, Ebenezer, Josiah, and Anderson; adn daughters Amelia Jane and Mary.

On April 7, 1813, Rev. John McPherrin was installed pastor of the churches at Butler and Concord by the Presbytery of Erie.  A geographical history states:  "He began preaching in the court-house at Butler, to the newly organized church in this borough, devoting three-fourths of his time to it and one-fourth to the church at Concord.  In 1815, a stone meeting-house was erected, on the site of the present building, and in it the pioneer preacher held regular services until his death, February 10, 1822."

In the 1820 U.S. census, John McPherrin, DD, was enumerated in Center, Butler, Pennsylvania.  Only age-ranges were listed, but the household included his wife, Mary; daughter, Mary; and three sons, Ebenezer, Josiah, and Anderson.

Rev. John McPherrin died 10 Feb 1822 in Butler.  His will, dated 24 Dec 1821, was probated on 8 Mar 1822.  Those named in the will were his wife, Mary; daughters Lowrie and Mary Sullivan; sons, William, John and Clark; and three grandchildren:  (indescribable), Josiah, and Anderson.  A small headstone marks his grave in the North Side Cemetery, Butler, Butler, Pennsylvania.

In later years a large plaque was added between his and his wife's original markers.
