Notes: *Betsie was the name given to her per her official
Birth record — a name very
similar to her mother's name Betsey. However, this woman
went by the name Bessie in all other Sources listed above. In 1861 Bessie was apparently sent to the town of Exeter to attend school. In 1871 Bessie was 16 and living at her parents' 316-acre farm with her brother William, a cousin, a niece, and 5 servants and farm laborers — 11 persons total in the house at Sanford, Devon, England. When the 1881 Census was taken, Bessie was 25 and visiting the Pullman family's Rolestone home in the Morchard Bishop parish of Devon. In addition to Bessie, 9 Pullman family members plus 2 servants resided at the Rolestone house. Mr. Pullman also employed 6 men and 1 boy at his 325-acre farm. In 1891 Bessie was 35 and the head of a 5-person household in the town of Exmouth in Devon, England. Bessie, her sisters Jane and Sarah, a visiting lady, and 12 years old niece Sophie Marian Pullman resided there. The four older women were single and living on their own means. Bessie was named as the Executrix in the wills of Julia Sophia Pullman and Henry Octavius Pullman. Bessie passed away in 1939 at the age of 82. Her estate was valued at a relatively large £3562 17s. 6d. Her grave marker is unusual in that also records the deaths and ages of three of her siblings: . Edwin Walter Palmer who died in 1916 at age 62 . Jane Palmer who died in 1932 at age 73 . Sarah Bodley Palmer who died in 1933 at age 72 | ||||||||||||||||||||||
