Notes: William and Sarah were married at the First Baptist Church in Plainwell, Michigan, in 1881 — and their first three children were born in Michigan. The family moved from Michigan to California in 1883, and located in Sonoma with an uncle, the late Obie Chart, who at that time owned the property on which the Presidio of California was located.
After a year in Sonoma the family moved to Napa in about 1884.
William and Sarah's remaining children were born in Napa.
Five of their first 7 children survived to 1900, and six of their
9 children survived to 1910. According to Bill Rumble, William and Sarah soon became members of the Salvation Army and involved in the efforts of the Napa Salvation Army corps until their deaths. Their very public activities included playing in a local SA band on a prominent downtown Napa street corner. William and Sarah were strict temperance folks — even attending Prohibition Party meetings. The family home at 1436 G Street, one of the first in Napa's Spencer district, was build by William — probably during the summer of 1906. The photograph at the right shows Sarah and William in about 1910. By 1920, three members of the family (William, Irvin, and John) were working at a ship yard — probably the Mare Island Naval Shipyard. William and Sarah remained in Napa until their deaths in 1945 and 1944, respectively.
