Born in Reno, Mr. Whitthorne moved with his parents to Vallejo in 1888 and was raised and educated there. In 1902 he went to work for Mare Island and retired as head engineer in 1948. He had lived in Napa since 1922 and was very active in community and civic affairs as co-founder of the Napa County Mosquito Abatement District and president of the school board in the 1920s. Mr. Whitthorne was a member of the Napa Business and Professional Mens Club, the Federal Retired Employees (N.A.R.C.E.), the Napa County Historical Society and the Napa Lodge No. 832.B.P.O. Elks. Survivors include a son Robert C. Whitthorne Jr. of Napa; two daughters Mrs. Edwina Wilson of Hawaii and Mrs. Marie Laubhan of Fresno; and a brother, Harry S. Whitthorne of Spain. Friends are invited to attend a memorial Requiem Mass at St. Mary's Episcopal Church at 10 a.m. Friday. The Rev. Father Thomas Turnbull will officiate. Cremation services were held under the direction of Richard Pierce Funeral Service. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Hanna Boys Center in Sonoma. | ||
