Notes: Rubert Harold Smith was born 30 Nov 1898 near Delphos, Ottawa County, Kansas. His parents were Horace True Smith and Elizabeth Jane Haley. In the 1900 U.S. census, the family was living in Logan Twp., Ottawa County. His father Horace was farming on leased land. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
In the 1905 Kansas census, Rupert was living with his parents in Pleasant Valley Twp.,
Saline County, Kansas. Rupert now had two sisters, Ruth, born in 1901,
and Florence, 1903. In the 1910 U.S. census, the family is again found in
Logan Twp., Ottawa County. Three more children had been added, namely Esther,
born in 1905, Lester, 1908, and Gertrude, 1910. By the 1915 Kansas census, Rupert was living with his family in Sheridan Twp., Ottawa, Kansas. His last sister Dorothy had been born in 1912. The seven children now ranged in age from 16 years to 3 years. His father Horace was a grain farmer. When Rupert registered for the World War I draft in 1918, his address was Delphos, the town in the center of Sheridan Twp. He was farming for himself, and was described as being of medium height and weight, with blue eyes and brown hair. He is not found in the 1920 U.S. census. Rupert married Vesta Mary Durst on 5 Oct 1920 at her parent's home in Delphos, Ottawa, Kansas. In the 1925 Kansas State census, Rupert and Vesta, were living in Sheridan Twp., Ottawa, Kansas. Rupert was a grain farmer, renting the land and farming on his own account. Their son Ivan had been born in 1922. Their daughter Lois was born in 1926. Rupert continued to farm in Sheridan Twp., Ottawa. In Feb 1931, he served as a pall bearer at the funeral services for his grand-aunt, Mary Detwiller Davis. In the 1940 U.S. census, Rupert is reported as having completed the second year of high school. In 1952, Rupert and Vesta moved into Delphos. Rupert became sexton of the Delphos Cemetery. In Sep 1970, their children helped them celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a open house at the Delphos United Methodist Church. Rupert retired in 1975. Rupert's wife Vesta died 3 Sep 1979. Rupert died 12 Aug 1991 at the Ashbury-Salina Medical Center, Salina, Saline, Kansas. His last residence was Delphos, Ottawa, Kansas. His funeral services were held 15 Aug 1979 at the Delphos United Methodist Church, the Revs. Darrell Watters and James Flick officiating.
