Notes: In the 1885 Kansas State census, Clarence and Mary Ballou were living in Sheridan
Twp., Ottawa County, Kansas. This farm was their lifelong home, where they raised their ten
children. In the 1885 census, Clarence was listed as C.J. Ballou, 24, farmer, born in
Wisconsin. His wife Mary, 25, was born in Iowa. Their children were Florence, 4, and
Jessie, 1, both born in Kansas. Living with the family was his father, A.D. Ballou, 55, a
widower and a doctor, born in Massaschusetts. Also, W.A. Locke, 26, a widower and a laborer,
born in Tennessee. The 1895 Kansas census listed the family as A.D. Bellou, 66, Massachusetts, M.D., C.J. Bellou, 35, Wisconsin, A.L., and May Bellou, 36, Iowa. The children, all born in Kansas, were Flora, 14, Jessie, 11, Alice, 9, Hazel, 7, and Miner, 4. Also in the household was Jo Darst, 17, Iowa. The 1900 U.S. census listed the family as Clarence Ballou, 39, born Jul 1860, married 21 years, farmer, and Mary L. Ballou, 40, born Aug 1859, having had eight children, seven living. The children were Florence E., 19, Feb 1881, Jessie M., 16, Aug 1883, Alice C., 14, Dec 1887, Miner M., 9, Oct 1890, Russel K, 3, Dec 1898, all at school, and Donald D., 1, Oct 1898. Also, three farm laborers, John M. Slothower, 25, Jan 1875, Kansas, Joseph L. Richardson, 49, Kansas, Oct 1898, and Harry Pilcher, 18, Jun 1880, Pennsylvania. The 1905 Kansas census listed the family as C.J. Ballou, 40, Mary Ballou, 45, and the children Flora, 24, Jessie, 21, Alice, 19, Hazel, 17, Miner, 14, Kenneth, 8, Donald, 6, Lewis, 4, and Dorothy, 1. Also, Eugene Doty, 20, and Alec Thompson, 26. By the 1910 U.S. census, some of the children had left home. Clarence, 49, was owned the farm, free of mortgage, and was also raising stock. Mary, 50, had ten children, nine now living. The children listed were Jessie, 26, Hazel, 22, Miner, 19, Kenneth, 13, Donald, 11, Louis, 9, and Dorothy, 6. In the 1915 Kansas census, C.J. Ballou, 54, is listed as farmer, Mary, 55, housewife, Jessie, 32, school teacher, Hazel, 28, telephone employee, and Kenneth, 18, Donald, 17, Louie, 15, and Dorothy, 10, all in school. Martin Anderson, 23, Sweden, was a farm laborer. Also renting was Will Young, 40, laborer, Margaret Young, 40, housewife, and Will Young, 12, in school, all from Scotland. The 1920 U.S. census lists Clarence J. Ballou, 59, farming and stock, Mary L. Ballou, 60, and children Hazel H., 32, Lewis M, 19, labor at home, and Dortha R., 15. The 1925 Kansas State census lists C.J. Ballou, 64, farmer of grain and live stock, Mary L. Ballou, 65, and Dorothy R., 21, the only child still at home. Mary Ballou died in 1925, and the 1930 U.S. census lists Clarence J. Ballou, 69, as a widow and retired. In the 1940 U.S. census, Clarence J. Ballou, 79, widowed, is listed as an unpaid family worker. He is living in the same house as in 1935, valued at $1,000., and had completed, third grade. Clarence died in 1947. Both Clarence and his wife Mary are buried in the Delphos Cemetery, Delphos, Kansas, along with all but two of their children. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
