Notes: According to family sources, James Murdoch Stewart was born 22 Sep 1851
in St. Louis, St. Louis, Missouri. His parents were William Stewart and Elizabeth
Murdoch. At the age of 4, his family traveled with the William B. Hodgetts
Company to Salt Lake City, Utah. The company of about 160 individuals, with 33 wagons,
left St. Louis, Missouri on 30 Jul 1856 and arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah on 10 Dec 1856.
His mother Elizabeth and a newborn sister died on the journey. On 22 Dec 1873, James, 22, married Mary Jennett Duncan, 20, in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah. Mary Jennett was born 15 Apr 1854 in Fillmore, Millard, Utah. Her parents were James Duncan and Janet Snedden. To this marriage, nine children were born. In the 1880 U.S. census, James M. Stewart, 27, and his wife, Mary J. Stewart, 26, were living in Meadow, Millard, Utah. James was a laborer and Elizabeth was keeping house. Their children were Nephi, 3, and Mary E., 11 months. Their first born son, James William, born in 1875 had died in 1878 of diphtheria. On 12 Dec 1883, James married Elizabeth Emma Duncan, the younger sister of his first wife Mary. Elizabeth Emma was born 8 Feb 1866 in Meadow, Millard, Utah. It was a polygamy marriage sanctioned at that time by the Latter-day Saints church. To this marriage, nine children were born. In September 1890, James was arrested by U.S. marshals, and sentenced to six months in prison for breaking the Edmunds Anti-Polygamy Act of 1882. He served five months in the Utah Penitentiary, before returning to his family. About 1893, he built a large brick home for his growing family in Meadow, Millard, Utah. The two families lived together in this home until sometime after 1910. In the 1900 U.S. census, James M. Stewart, 48, was living with his two wives and children in Meadow, Millard, Utah. James was a farmer. According to a daughter, he owned a field west, and a large dry farm southwest of town. His wife of 26 years, Mary Stewart, 46, had had nine children, eight of whom were then living. Those still at home were Nephi R., 23, farm laborer; Duncan, 17, farm laborer; Christina, 13, in school; George L., 11, in school; and Ephraim, 7, Clifford, 5, and Angus, 3. His wife of 16 years, Elizabeth E. Stewart, 33, was a midwife. She had had six children, all of whom were then living. These were Emma J., 15, in school; Niel M., 13, in school; Ruth E., 10, in school; and Isaac, 7, Zina, 4, and Violet, 2. In the 1910 U.S. census, James M. Stewart, 60, was living with his two wives and children in Meadow, Millard, Utah. James was a general farmer. His wife of 37 years, Mary J. Stewart, 55, had had nine children, eight of whom were then living. His wife of 26 years, Elizabeth E. Stewart, 44, had had nine children, all of whom were then living. The children still at home were Tina, 23, George, 21, home farm laborer, Ruth E., 20, Ephram, 17, Issac, 17, Clifford, 15, Zina, 14, Angus, 13, Violate, 12, Grace, 8, Blanch, 6, Golden D., 4. Of the younger children, all but Golden attended school. Also living in the household were James Duncan, 82, and his wife Jennette Duncan, 79. They were James' inlaws, the parents of Mary and Elizabeth. In the 1920 U.S. census, James M. Stewart, 68, and his wife Mary J. Stewart, 65, were living in Meadow, Millard, Utah. They owned their farm, free of mortgage. James was a retired farmer. Their children at home were Clifford, 25, laborer in a sugar factory; and Angus, 23, a laborer on the home farm. Listed next in the 1920 U.S. census, in a separate household was Elizabeth Stewart, 58, married and head of a household, free of mortgage. The children at home were Issac, 30, laborer on the home farm: Violate, 20, Grace, 18, Blanche, 14, and Golden, 12. The youngest two children attended school. In the 1930 U.S. census, James M. Stewart, 78, and his wife, Mary J. Stewart, 75, were living in Meadow, Millard, Utah. They owned their home, not on a farm, valued at $2,000. Listed in the home was Angus Stewart, 33, their son, a general farmer, widowed, with his children Deloy, 5, and Carmen W., 4. Listed in a separate household in Meadow was James S. Stewart, 78, and his wife Elizabeth E. Stewart, 64. They owned their home, valued at $1,500. not on a farm. Listed living at home was their son Golden, 24, a general farmer. According to his family biographies, in his younger years, James was a freighter, hauling mining equipment for the Kennecott mines in Southern Utah. He and his first wife Mary also spent two winters in St. George, Utah, while he helped build the St. George LDS Temple. He was an active member of the LDS church. He was the first missionary from the Meadow Ward, and completed three missions during his life. He sent five of his sons on missions. He served as president of the Elders and Quorum of Seventy, and served on the High Council of Millard Stake. James Murdoch Stewart died 5 Jan 1932 at the age of 80 in Meadow, Millard, Utah. Both of his wives are listed on his death certificate. Cause of death was pneumonia. His wife Elizabeth was the informant on the death certificate. He was buried in the Meadow Cemetery, Meadow, Millard, Utah on 7 Jan 1932. In the 1940 U.S. census, Mary Stewart, 85, widowed, was living in Meadow, Millard, Utah. She had completed the sixth grade. She owned the house valued at $1,000., the same house as in 1935. Elizabeth Stewart, 74, widowed, was also living in Meadow, Millard, Utah. She owned the house valued at $2,800., the same house as in 1935. She had completed the sixth grade. Mary Jennett Stewart died 16 Dec 1942 at the age of 88 in Meadow, Millard, Utah. Cause of death was obstruction of the intestine (chronic) probably due to carcinoma of the large intestine. Her son George L. Stewart was the informant on the death certificate. She was buried 20 Dec 1942 in the Meadow Cemetery. Elizabeth E. Stewart died 10 Apr 1950 at the age of 84 at home in Meadow, Millard, Utah. Cause of death was senility due due arteriosclerosis heart disease. Her son Neil Stewart was the informant on the death certificate.
