In the 1900 U.S. census, Dion, 5, was living with his mother, Emma, 27, and brother Gunod, 7,
at 1073 Wall Street in the city of Los Angeles. His mother was a music teacher.
During their younger years, both Dion and Gounod played the violin at social gatherings with
their mother accompanying them. In the 1910 U.S. census, Dion, 15, and Gunod, 17,
were still living on Wall Street, and Emma, 37, was teaching music in their home. Dion attended Polytechnic High School in Los Angeles, graduating in 1914. He was a member of the high school orchestra, and at the commencement ceremonies, played a solo as well as with a string quartet. In alumni news in the 1916 year book, he is mentioned as being a member of the Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra, undoubtedly playing the violin. Dion, 22, registered for the World War I draft on 5 Jun 1917. He was described as short, of medium build, with brown hair and dark brown eyes. He claimed a physical disability prevented him from serving. He listed himself as a self-employed manufacturer, at 221 N. Greffen Ave, Los Angeles, and he was helping to support his mother. In 1920, Dion, 24, was the only son still living with Emma, 45, on Wall Street. He was listed as a musician, playing in theaters. Dion H. Romandy married Fannie M. Dow 28 Jun 1921 in Los Angeles. In 1924, when they registered to vote, their address was 4768 W. 12th St., Los Angeles. He was a musician and Republican, and Frances was a housewife and declined to state a party. Their son Richard Dion was born in May 1925. Their daughter Lois Anne was born in Sep 1929, and only lived three days. In the 1930 U.S. census, Dion, 35, and Frances, 36, were living at 916 Holt, Los Angeles. Their son Richard was 4, and Dion was still playing in theaters. In the 1940 U.S. census, they were living in Beverly Hills. Dion, 45, was working on radio as a musician, and had completed four years of high school. Frances, 46, had completed four years of college, and Richard, 14, one year of high school. The rent for their apartment at 200½ Rexford Drive was $50., and they had a radio. They were registered as Democrats in the voter records. In the 1942 "Old Men's Draft", Dion Heberling Romandy, 47, living on Rexford Drive, Beverly Hills, was working for Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, Burbank, California. In the 1950 U.S. census, still in their Rexford apartment, Dion H., 55, was a musician for a radio broadcasting station. Frances D. was 56. Dion died 18 Oct 1973 in San Diego County, California. His last residence was in Solano Beach. His wife died in 1985. They are buried in the Eternal Hills Memorial Park, Oceanside, San Diego County, California. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
