Notes: Alexander B. Detwiller was born 5 Aug 1872 in St. Marys, Perth, Ontario. *At birth he was registered as "Samuel Alexander", Samuel being the first name of his maternal grandfather. However, he was known as Alex. He was the oldest son of Andrew Detwiller and Jane Moore. His brother Harry was born in 1875, and brother Albert in 1877. In the 1881 and 1891 Canada census records, the family was living on Lot 31, Conc. EMR, Fullarton Twp. The Post Office was Motherwell. His paternal grandfather Christian Detwiller lived with the family. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
In 1896 Alex immigrated to the United States, settling near Cooperstown, Tyrol Twp.,
Griggs County, North Dakota, near other Detwiller families. The newspaper
reports that he traveled back to Ontario to visit his parents in Motherwell in
January 1900. While there he married Agnes Jane Roger. They returned to
North Dakota in March 1900. The 1900 through 1930 U.S. and North Dakota census
records report that Alex was a grain farmer. Their farm was located about
8 miles northwest of Cooperstown, Tyrol Twp., Griggs County. The 1910 Tyrol
County Land Ownership Map shows Alexander owned 360 acres on the NW ¼ of
Sec 27. Alex became a naturalized citizen in 1902. Alex's wife Agnes died 6 Feb 1938,in Griggs County, North Dakota. The couple did not have any children. Alex moved to Vancouver, British Columbia about 1953. His last address was 784 Thurlow St., the home of a niece. Alex died 26 Apr 1954 at Vancouver General Hospital. The cause of death was bronchial pneumonia following an accute coronary thrombosis. His body was sent home to North Dakota to be buried with his wife Agnes in the Cooperstown Cemetery, Cooperstown, Griggs, North Dakota. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
