Notes: Ethel G. Haley was born 10 Feb 1884 in Ottawa County, Kansas. Her parents were Abraham Haley and Marion Detwiller. She was the eleventh of twelve children. Ethel's oldest siblings, Nicholas, William, and Minnie had been born in Ontario, Canada. Her father was a farmer. In late 1870, the family moved to Kansas, settling on a homestead in Logan Township, Ottawa County, eight miles northeast of Minneapolis. Ethel's older siblings, Rosa, Hattie, Elizabeth, Susan, John and Nettie, and younger brother Abraham, were all born in Kansas. Hattie, Susan, an unnamed infant, John and Abraham died young. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Ethel married Oscar J. Smith on 12 Nov 1901 in Minneapolis, Ottawa, Kansas.
J.F. Scherer, a Minister of the Gospel, performed the ceremony. Ethel was 17
years of age and Oscar was 5 years older. Oscar was a farmer, and they started
out farming in Logan Twp., Ottawa County. Ethel had five children. Velna
was born about 1903, Clement on 2 Feb 1905, and Bernice, a son, in 1908
Their son Darrel was born 5 Jul 1911, but died 23 Jul 1912. A daughter Maurine
was born 25 Jun 1913, but died 27 Jul 1913. In the 1915 Kansas State census, Ethel, Oscar and their three living children were farming in Blaine Twp., Ottawa County. By the 1920 U.S. census, they had moved to Center Twp., Ottawa. Ethel attended the Lutheran Church and Sunday School for many years. She was ill for the last eighteen months of her life, and died 12 Nov 1926, on her 25th Wedding Anniversary. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church, Minneapolis, on Sunday, 14 Nov 1926, the Rev. Seville of New Cambria officiating. Ethel had made the arrangements ahead of time, choosing her own pall bearers and music. She was buried in the Highland Cemetery, Minneapolis, Kansas. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
