Notes:  Ruth Naomi Smith was born 7 Jul 1901 in Logan Twp., Ottawa, Kansas.  Her parents were Horace True Smith and Elizabeth Jane Haley.  She had an older brother Rupert, born in Nov 1898.  In the 1905 Kansas Census, the family was living in Pleasant Valley Twp., Saline County, Kansas.  Her sister Florence had been born in 1903.  The family spent eight years farming in Saline County, Kansas, before returning to Ottawa County.

In the 1910 U.S. census in Logan Twp., Ottawa, Ruth had three more siblings, namely Esther, born in 1905, Lester, 1908, and Gertrude, 1910.  By the 1915 Kansas census, the family was living in Sheridan Twp., Ottawa, Kansas.  Her last sister Dorothy had been born in 1912.  Her father Horace was a grain farmer.

In the 1920 U.S. census, Ruth, 18, was living in Delphos City, the town in the center of Sheridan Twp., Ottawa County.  She was boarding with Macey E. Haley, 56, a relative.  No occupation was listed.  She graduated from Delphos High School in 1921, and worked for B.S. Chance Food Store for one year.

Ruth married Russell Kenneth Ballou on 9 Aug 1922 in her parents's home in Sheridan Twp., Ottawa.  In the 1925 Kansas State census, Ruth and Kenneth were living in Sheridan Twp.  They had a daughter, Mary Maxine, age 2.  Kenneth was a farmer, grain and stock.  Their farm was located 1¼ miles north of Delphos, and they lived here their entire marriage.  By the 1930 U.S. census, Ruth had had two more children, Dorothy Ruth and LaVerne Kenneth.  By the 1940 U.S. census, their last child, Alvin Eugene had arrived.

Quoting from her obituary found in Find A Grave:  "Ruth was a Sunday School teacher and organist several years at Lakeview Sunday School.  She was a member of the Delphos United Methodist Church.  She was a charter member of the Delphos W.S.C.S. and a past president.  She helped organize the Parent Teacher Association and was a past president.  She was a Delphos 4-H club leader for 10 years and a member of the County Extension Clubs for over 50 years.  She was a member and past president of Minneapolis Green Thumb Garden Club.  Ruth was a charter member of Delphos Federated Women's Club, and a member of the Auziliary of World War I Barracks Number 3059 Minneapolis, Kansas."

Ruth died 10 Jan 1981 at the Ottawa County Hospital, Minneapolis, Kansas.  Funeral services were held Tuesday, 13 Jan 1981 at the United Methodist Church, Delphos, the Rev. Claude McMinn officiating.  She is buried in the Delphos Cemetery, Delphos, Kansas.
