Notes: John McFarren was born 5 Feb 1841 in Liberty Twp., Wells, Indiana. He was the last of
eleven children of John McFarren and Elizabeth Foust. In the 1850 U.S. census, John McFarren, 9, was living with his family in Liberty Twp., Wells, Indiana. His parents, John, 58, and Elizabeth, 54, were farmers. His siblings still at home were Melissa, 18, and Margaret, 13. In the 1860 U.S. census, John McFarren, 19, a farmer, was living with his parents, John, 68, and Elizabeth, 63. In the household was a granddaughter, Rachel Neff. John McFarren married Mary Ann Jackson on 23 Nov 1860 in Liberty Twp., Wells County, Indiana. That same year he was assessed $15.00 for his personal property. According to Bess McFarren Williams, a
grandaughter, he hid out in an Indian village during the civil war, and his wife Mary was a quarterbreed
Cherokee. There is no evidence of either fact, but also no indication that he ever actually served
in the war. On 21 Mar 1864, there is a land deed to John McFarren and James B. Plessinger for 100 acres of land for $500. in Wells County, Township Twenty-six, North of Range Twelve East. And on 9 Jul 1864, there is a sale of one-half of that land for $500. by John and Mary Ann McFarren. They moved briefly to Northern Missouri, then to Nebraska. In the 1865 Nebraska census, John McFarren, 24, and his wife Mary A., 21, were living in Otoe County, Nebraska. Their children were Loiza (Louisa), 3, and Harriet, 1. Also in the county were his parents, John and Elizabeth. John and Mary again moved briefly to Missouri. In the 1870 U.S. census, John "McFenni", 31, and his wife Mary, 26, were living in Avoca Precinct, Cass, Nebraska. The Post Office was Factoryville. John was a farmer, and had a personal estate of $900. Their children were Levisa (Louisa), 9, Harriet, 7, Franklin, 5, and Benjamin, 1. John and Mary again moved briefly back to Missouri. In the 1880 U.S. census, John "McFerren", 39, a farmer, and his wife Mary A., 36, keeping house, were living in Big Spring, Benton, Arkansas. Their children at home were Harriet Z., 16, Geor F., 13, farm worker, Benjamin L., 11, farm worker, Della M., 8, Pheby J., 6, William H., 4, and Eddie W., 7 months. In the 1900 U.S. census, John McFarren, 59, a farmer, and his wife Mary A., 55, were now living in the Noble Twp., Cleveland, Oklahoma. Their children at home were Edward, a farmer laborer, and Theodore, 14, in school. In Jan 1902, John and Mary Ann traveled back to Liberty Center, Wells, Indiana, for a Jackson family reunion. In the 1910 U.S. census, John McFarren, 69, and Mary, 66, were living in Red River Twp., Searcy, Arkansas. It was in the Ozark National Forest Reserve. John was farming on his own account, and they owned the farm free of mortgage. In the household was a granddaughter, May McFarren, 12. John and Mary moved to California about 1915. In June 1917, the City of Holtville had a delinquent tax bill for block 9, lot 15, in the sum of $14.69 against John McFarren. His wife Mary Ann died 7 Dec 1917 in Holtville, Imperial, California. In the 1920 U.S. census, John McFarren, 79, now widowed and a laborer, was boarding in the Guerrero household, Holtville. In the 1920 - 1926 Voter Registration rolls, he is listed as living on Orange Ave., retired and voting Socialist. John McFarren died 11 Mar 1922 in Holtville, Imperial, California.
