Notes: John McFarren (#2) and his wife Elizabeth Foust came to Indiana in about 1838,
and settled near Wells on the Huntington County line on
what was known as the McFarren homestead located a mile north and
a little west of what is now the village of Poneto, Indiana.
John and Elizabeth moved to Liberty Twp., Wells County in
1839. John was one of the first 13 settlers
and farmers in that township. Their farm probably was located just
west of the Hoosier Highway on land that included the current site of the
McFarren Cemetery.
In the 1840 U.S. census, John "McFerrin" and his wife were living in Liberty Twp., Wells, with
nine of their children, 4 boys and 5 girls. John was one of the first land claimants in
Liberty Township Section 32, and on 10 Nov 1840 his land patent document 3810 was
signed. He was one of the nine voters at the organization of Liberty Township
that occurred on the first Monday of April 1842.
In the 1850 U.S. census,John McFarren, 58, and Elizabeth, 54, were living on their farm in
Liberty Twp. Wells County. John was a farmer and their farm was valued at $800.
The children still at home were Marissa, 18, Elizabeth, 15, Margaret, 13, and John, 8.
When the 1860 U.S. census was taken, John McFarren, 68, and Elizabeth, 63, valued their farm at
$1,000., and their personal estate at $700. Living with them were John, 19, and a
granddaughter, Rachael Neff, 13. |
