Notes: James Elige Smith was born in England in Apr 1843. His parents, Robert Smith
and Anna Pierson, brought him and his brothers and sisters to America in 1851,
settling in Illinois. James served in the Civil War with the Illinois Cavalry.
He married Mary Elizabeth Pierson, daughter of William and Anna Pierson, in Illinois in
1869. In 1878, they brought their family to Kansas, settling on a farm in Logan
Twp., Ottawa County .
In the 1880 U.S. census, their children included Cora Bell, 9 years, Horace, 7, Nellie,
5, Emma, 3, and Oscar, 11 months. The oldest four had
been born in Illinois. Living with the family was Ely Smith, James' brother,
In 1885, Dock, 3, and Perry, 7 months, had joined the family.
By 1895, Cora Bell and Horace were no longer living with the family. Added
to the family was Adolphous, 6, and Mary, 3.
In the 1900 USA census, James was listed as a naturalized citizen, and owned the
farm. Mary had had ten, children, nine of who were still living, and are the
ones listed below. Still living at home were Nellie, Oscar, Perry, Adolphous,
and Mary. Oscar is listed as a farmer, and his two younger brothers as farm
laborers.
