Notes: According to family sources, Royal Barney was born 31 May 1894 in Escalante,
Garfield, Utah. His parents were Joseph Seth Barney and Lucy Ellen Heaps. Lillie May
Moosman was born 2 May 1898 in Escalante, Garfield, Utah. Her parents were William Moosman
and Sissie Christena Schow. Royal Barney, 22, and Lillie May Moosman, 18, were married
11 Oct 1916 in Marysvale, Piute, Utah. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt
Lake LDS Temple. They had a family of fourteen children. Their first son, Royal
was born 23 May 1917 and died a day later.
In June 1917 when Royal Barney, 23, registered for the World War I draft, they were living in Escalante,
Utah, and he was a wool grower and homesteader, employed by Scott Barney. He was described
as being of medium height and build with light blue eyes and light hair.
In the 1920 U.S. census, Royal Barney, 25, and his wife, Lillie M. Barney, 21, were living with his
parents, Joseph S. and Lucy Barney, on a farm in Escalante, Garfield, Utah. Royal was a sheep
herder. They had a daughter, Juanita, 1 7/12, born in Utah.
In the 1930 U.S. census, Royal Barney, 35, and his wife Lillie M. Barney, 31, were living on a farm
on Cedar Wash Road, Escalante, Garfield, Utah. Royal was a general farmer; they were renting and
and had a radio set. Their children were Juanita, 11, Wallace A., 9, and Evelyn, 7, all
attending school; and Lendon K., 5, Fern L., 2, and Cherril D., 8 months. A son, Lynn J., and
been born 10 Feb 1922, and died 8 days later.
In the 1940 U.S. census, Royal Barney, 45, and his wife Lillie May Barney, 41, were living on 2nd West,
Escalante, Garfield, Utah. They owned their house, valued at $1,000. Barney was a road
construction foreman, and had completed 2 years of high school. Lillie had completed
8th grade. The children at home were Wallace, 19, 3 years of high school and a C.C.C. Camp
laborer; Evelyn, 17, Lendon, 15, Fern, 12, Cherril, 10, Howard, 8, and Nina, 6, all attending school;
and Carla Dean, 2, and Clare, 9 months. Their last child Terry was born following the census.
In 1942, when Royal Barney, 48, registered for the World War II draft, their address was P.O. Box 4,
Escalante, Utah. He was working for the Pomeroy Construction Company in Lakeview, Utah.
He was described as 5'10", 195 lbs., with brown eyes, hair and complexion. During World War II,
their son Wallace Arnold Barney, USN, was killed in action in the Pacific on 25 Oct 1944. Their
daughter Evelyn was serving in the WAVES, and son Lendon K. was serving in the USN. During
this time the family was living in Benjamin, Utah, Utah.
Royal and Lillie moved to Springville, Utah, Utah, where they are listed in the 1955 through 1958
Springville City Directory living at 1190 S 400 East. Royal was a maintenance man for
Brigham Young University. In 1959, their son Clair, a construction worker, and his wife Dana S.,
were living in their basement apartment.
Royal was an active member of the LDS Church, serving in the Sunday School superintendency, and the
priesthood. He was a farmer, sheep raiser, landscape gardner and maintenance man. He
died of a heart attack on 1 Jul 1964 at his home in Springville. Funeral services were held
Monday, 6 Jul 1964 at the First-Twelth LDS Chapel, Springville. He is buried in the
Evergreen Cemetery, Springville, Utah.
Lillie Mae died 11 Nov 1993 at her home in Springville, of causes related to old age. She was
buried 16 Nov 1993 alongside her husband in the Evergreen Cemetery.
