Notes: According to family sources, George Walter Pate was born 19 Sep 1867 in Morgan
County, Illinois. His parents were John James Pate and Frances Ellen David. He was the
second of eight children. He married Elizabeth Reiter in 1891 and they had a son
and a daughter. Elizabeth died in 1910.
Lila Ellen Ayers was born 3 December 1884 in Deseret, Millard, Utah. Her parents were
Heber Caleb Ayers and Sarah Ellen Wright. She was the eighth of ten children. She
married Earl Justinian Ostrander in 1907 and they had one daughter. According to
newspaper reports, the marriage ended in divorce in September 1913.
According to family sources, George Walter Pate and Lila Ellen Ayers were married in Deseret,
Millard, Utah about 1912. This is before Lila's divorce was final. No marriage
record has been found. They had a family of five children.
In the 1920 U.S. census, George W. Pate, 50, and his wife Lila Pate, 37, were living in Oasis,
Millard, Utah. George was a general farmer, farming on his own account. Their home was
owned with a mortgage. The children were Jennie, 10, from Lila's first marriage, Iola. 5,
and Bud, 3. The household included Hans Peterson, 48, a boarder doing general farm labor.
In 1928, newspaper sources report the foreclosure proceedings against land owned by George and
Lila, and another couple. It was sometime between 1926 and 1928 that the couple moved
from Oasis to Delta.
In the 1930 U.S. census, George W. Pate, 56, and his wife Lila Pate, 45, were living in Delta,
Millard, Utah. The owned their residence, not on a farm, valued at $3,000. and did not
have a radio set. George was a real estate salesman, working on his own account. The
children were Iola, 15, Bud, 13, Lois, 9, and Jewel 5. Also in the household was Hans
Peterson, 56, now doing odd jobs. One more child was born in this marriage.
George died 6 Apr 1933 after a month long illness and heart problems. Cause of death was
Cardio Nephritis. Services were held
in the Second Ward Church, and he was buried 9 Apr 1933 in the Delta City Cemetery, Delta,
Utah.
Lila married a third time to Nicholas Albert Spor on 2 Feb 1935 in Juab, Utah. This was also
his third marriage. In the 1940 U.S. census, Nicholas Spor, 64, and his wife, Lila
Spor, 55, were living on Four South 3rd West, Delta, Millard, Utah. Nicholas had completed
5 years of school, and Lila 8 years. Living with them was Lila's daughter, Jewel Pate, 15,
who had completed 2 years of high school.
Lila died 18 Oct 1956 in a nursing home in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah. Cause of death
was Acute Dilitation of the heart; contributing factors were a long period of invalidism and a
rheumatic background. She was buried in the Delta City Cemetery on 20 Oct 1956.
Nicholas Spor died in 1968 in Colorado. |
