Notes: Alexander Detwiller was born 17 May 1836 in Perth County, Ontario. He was the first son of Christian and Marian Detwiller, and had an older sister Hannah. After Alexander his brothers and sisters included Agnes, Henry, Andrew, Marion, Mary, John, and Susan. In the1851 Canada census, the family is found living in the community of Motherwell, Fullarton Twp., Lot 31, Concession EMR (East Mitchell Road). The Lot was 90 acres in size, of which 18 acres were under cultivation. Christian was a farmer, and Alexander was a laborer. In 1854, Alexander is shown as the owner of the East 70 acres of Lot 31, the family farm. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Alexander's mother Marion died sometime between 1853 and 1861 as she does not appear
in the 1861 Canaada census. In 1861, his father Christian is listed as a
widower, with seven of the children still at home in the family's 1½ story
log house. Alexander married Elizabeth Parker, 1 Nov 1859 in the Avonbank Presbyterian Church. In the 1861 Canada census, Elizabeth and Alexander were living on their farm in a log house. Alexander was a farmer. In the 1871 Canada census, Fullarton Twp., six children were listed, namely Rebecca Dunn, born in 1860, Marion, 1862, Christopher, 1863, Elizabeth, 1865, John, 1867, and Alexander, 1879. A daughter Bertha had died as an infant in 1869, and Christopher was to die in 1876. By the 1881 Canada census, four more children had been added to the family, namely Annie, born in 1873, William, 1875, James, 1876, and Isabella, 1878. By 1885, the family was complete, with the addition of Innis, born in 1883, and Robert, 1885. Alexander suffered from a liver disease for three years, and died 17 Sep 1887 of a kidney abscess.
