"Golden day for Smiths". "DELPHOS - The children of Mr. and Mrs. Rupert H. Smith, Delphos,will fete the couple with a pre-50th wedding anniversary open house Oct 4. Entertaining from 2 to 5 p.m. at Delphos United Methodist Church will be Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Smith, Coldwater, Kan. and Mr. and Mrs. James (Lois) Shirley, Delphos. The honorees were married Oct. 5, 1920 at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. & Mrs. N.E. Durst, Delphos. For 22 years they lived on a farm in the Lakeview community near Delphos, and moved to Delphos in 1952. Mr. Smith has been sexton of the Delphos cemetery for the past 16 years. Smith, 81, lifelong resident of the Delphos area, will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, Delphos, the Rev. Eugene Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the Delphos Cemetery. Mrs. Smith died Monday at the Delphos Rest Home. She was born July 12, 1898, on a farm near Delphos, and had lived in the area all of her life. Mrs. Smith had been a resident of the rest home since last April. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and Rebekah Lodge. Surviving are her husband, Rubert, Delphos; a son, Ivan, Burlington; a daughter, Lois Shirley, Delphos; three sisters, Mrs. Ethel Johnsten, Peabody; Mrs. Dora Ablard, Kansas City, Mo.; and Mrs. Lillian Hurtgig, Delphos; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. "DELPHOS - Rupert H. Smith, 92, Delphos, died Monday, Aug. 12, 1991, at Ashbury-Salina Regional Medical Center. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Shields Funeral Home, Minneapolis." Smith, 92, Delphos, will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Delphos United Methodist Church, the Revs. Darrell Watters and James Flick officiating. Burial will be in Delphos Cemetery. Mr. Smith died Monday, Aug. 12, 1991, at Ashbury-Salina Regional Medical Center. He was born Nov. 30, 1898, on a farm near Delphos, and lived in the area most of his life. He was sexton of the Delphos Cemetery until retiring in 1975. He was a member of the Delphos United Methodist Church and Internation Order of Odd Fellows. His wife, Vesta R., died in 1979. Survivors include a son, Ivan D. of Salina; a daughter, Lois Shirley of Delphos; a sister, Florence Bergsten of Delphos; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and five stepgreat-great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the church or the Dalphos Rest Home. Visitation will be until 9 p.m. today at the Shields Funeral Home, Minneapolis, and until the services Thursday at the church."
