Notes: William Henry McFarren was born 28 Dec 1876 in Neosho, Newton, Missouri. He was the seventh of ten children of John McFarren and Mary Ann Jackson. In the 1880 U.S. census, William H., 4, was living with his family in Big Spring Township, Benton, Arkansas. His father John, 39, was a farmer, and his mother Mary A., 36, was keeping house, His siblings were Harriet I., 16, George F., 13, Benjamin L. 11, Della M., 8, Pheby J., 6, and Eddie W., 7 months. Wm H. McFarren, 20, married Rebecca J. Ellison, 16, on 21 Mar 1897 in Carroll County,
Arkansas. In the 1900 U.S. census, William, 25, and his brother, E. Moore, 18, were
both day laborers, boarding in the home of Marian N. Jones, 50, his wife Althea A., 47,
and their four children. Their address was 807 South Royer, Colorado Springs,
El Paso, Colorado. William was listed as single. In the 1910 U.S. census, William H., 33, and his wife Rebecca, 28, were living in Noble, Cleveland, Oklahoma. William was a laborer doing odd jobs, and they owned their home free of mortgage. Their children were Bessie, 9, Rubey, 7, and Roy, 4. According to family sources, Will and his wife Rebecca split up, and he left her in Oklahoma and came out to the Imperial Valley (Brawley) with his children. This was prior to July 1914. Will was in Holtville in December 1917 when his mother died. In the 1918 Holtville City Directory, Wm. McFarren is listed as a laborer residing at Walnut and 6th. His brother Exie was also listed in Holtville. When William Henry McFarren, 42, registered for the W.W.I draft, he was described as being of medium height and medium build. He had brown eyes and dark hair. He listed his father John of Noble, Oklahoma, as his relative. He is not found in the 1920 U.S. census. William H. McFarren is found in the 1920 - 1926 Great Register of Voters, Holtville, Imperial County along with his father John. William was a farmer, and John a rancher. Both registered as Socialists. William was a fruit worker, and according to Charles T. McFarren, he was very fast working through an orchard. In the 1929 Modesto City Directory, William was listed living at 206 Maple Street with Josephine 'McFarren'. He was a carpenter. In the 1931 through 1933 directories, their address was 1016½ 6th Street. He is not found in the 1930 U.S. census. William married Josephine Coughran on 1 Feb 1935 in Matamoros, Tamailipas, Mexico. Matamoros is a border town about 100 miles south of Corpus Christi, Texas. Her name on the registration was Josephine Duncan McFarren, indicating her prior marriage and her current relationship with William. They were divorced before 1940. In the 1940 U.S. census, W. H. McFarren, 66, was living on River Road in Ceres, Stanislaus County. He was divorced, the rent was $10. monthly, he had completed 8th grade, and had a lodger, Toney Taylor, 57. In the 1950 U.S. census, William McFarren, 74, was living alone at 706 Atlantic, Ceres, Stanislaus County. He identified himself as "widowed". At age 74, he remarried Josephine Coughran, 74, on 7 Mar 1951 in Stanislaus County. In the 1952 through 1959 Modesto City Directories, they were living at 706 Atlantic Circle, Modesto. His brother Exie M. and wife Cornelia lived nearby at 711 Empire Avenue. William Henry McFarren died 5 Jul 1959 in the Stanislaus County Hospital, Modesto.
