Notes: According to family records, Hosea Fisk Stout was born 14 Dec 1852 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake,
Utah. His parents were Allen Joseph Stout and Amanda Fisk. Clearinda Jane Langston was born 2 Feb 1857
in Alpine, Utah, Utah. Her parents were John Langston and Clarinda Phillips. Hosea and Clearinda
were married 22 Mar 1872 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah. They had a family of eleven children, and
were members of the Latter-day Saints.
In the 1880 U.S. census, Hosea F. Stout, 27, and Clarinda L. Stout, 23, were living in Rockville, Kane, Utah.
Hosea was a cooper. Their children were Clarinda Ann, 7, Mary Mariah, 4, and Hosea F., 3. Six more
children were born while they were living in Rockville.
One child, Alice Louisa Stout, born in 1880 after the census was taken, married in 1898,
thus never appears with her parents in a census record.
In the 1900 U.S. census, Hosea Stout, 47, born Dec 1852, and his wife Clarinda Stout, 52, born Feb 1848, were
living in Hinckley, Millard, Utah. Hosea was a farmer. They had been married for 27 years and had
eleven children, all then living. The children at home were: Hosea F., 22, born Feb 1878, a farm
laborer; Laura, 17, born Apr 1883, at school; Mabel, 14, born Dec 1885, at school; Eliza, 11, born Jun 1888, at
school; Amanda, 9, born Dec 1890, at school; Abby, 6, born Mar 1894; Francis H., 3, born Jun 1896; and Ruby, 1
year, born Feb 1899.
In the 1900 U.S. census, the Stout family was enumerated next to the Frank Walker
family. The Stout's daughter Alice Stout Walker, 19, born Sep 1880, was married to a son, George
H. Walker, 24, born Nov 1875. Alice and George had a daughter, Rela, 7 months, born Oct 1899.
Clearinda Jane Stout died 11 Aug 1906 in Hinckley, Millard, Utah, of cancer of the liver. On her death
certificate her occupation was listed as mid-wife. The birth certificate of her grandson
Hosea Leon Walker on 9 May 1906, just three months before her death, notes he was
delivered by C.J. Stout. She was buried 13 Aug 1906 in the Hinckley Cemetery, Hinckley, Millard, Utah.
According to family records, Hosea married Martha Luella Stewart on 5 May 1909 in the Salt Lake Temple, Salt
Lake City, Utah. In the 1910 U.S. census, Hosea F. Stout, 57, and his wife Martha L. Stout, 20, were living
in Hinckley, Millard, Utah, and enumerated next to his daughter
Alice Walker's family. Hosea was a blacksmith with his own shop. The children from his first
marriage were Abbie, 16, Francis, 13, and Ruby, 10, all attending school. He had a son, Delbert S., one
month, from his second marriage.
According to his obituary, Hosea was active in Church matters, and was a county
attorney for Millard County, before moving to Salt Lake City in the early 1920's.
Hosea Fisk Stout died 22 Jan 1931 in the Salt Lake General Hospital, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah. Cause
of death was uremia, brought on by prostatic hypertrophy. At the time of his death his residence was
357 South 2nd East, Salt Lake City. He was the elevator man in the Tribune Building, employed by the Tribune
Publishing Company, Salt Lake City, Utah. He was buried in the Hinckley Cemetery
on 25 Jan 1931. |
