Services held Monday for George L. Stewart Funeral services for George Lyle Stewart, 70, were conducted Monday at 1 p.m. in Hinckley Ward Chapel. Mr. Stewart died Friday, Nov. 20, in a Salt Lake hospital after a long illness. He was born Feb. 22, 1889, at Meadow, Millard County, a son of James and Mary Jennette Duncan Stewart. He attended school at Meadow, Murdock Academy, at Beaver, and Millard Academy at Hinckley, where he came in 1910. He taught school in Holden. He married Clara Walker Oct. 3, 1912,in the Salt Lake Temple, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Their home was made at Hinckley, where Mr. Stewart was active in church and community affairs. He served a six-months home mission, was first counselor of the stake genealogical committee, and was ward clerk under three Bishops. He served as high priest teacher, and was secretary of the high priests until his last illness. He is survived by his wife, at Hinckley; four sons, six daughters, Mrs. Delna Arthur, Cedar City; Mrs. Norma Pate, American Fork; George L., Pleasant Grove; Mrs. Florence Smith, Inspiration, Ariz.; Mrs. Mary Abbot, Spanish Fork; Mrs. Jean Caldwell, Long Beach, Calif.; Reed, Hinckley; Mrs. Joy Christensen, Oak City; Duane W., Provo; Don, Central States LDS Mission; 29 grandchildren; a great-grandchild, brothers and sisters, Neil, Clifford, Angus, Ruth Bennett, Zina Stott, Violet Bennett, Minnie Beckstrand, Meadow; Blanch Labrum, Fillmore; Golden, Eureka; Duncan, Ogden; Christina Davis, Lehi. The services were opened with a song by Hinckley Ward choir. The opening prayer was by Orin Bliss. Prayer with the family prior to the services was by J. Avery Bishop. Prelude and postlude music was by Mrs. Roma Ekins. Speakers were Almond Robison, Neil Stewart, Arthur Reeve and Bishop Elden Hurst. They spoke of Mr. Stewart's high principles and spiritual strength. His kindly ways will long be remembered by a wide circle of friends and a devoted family. Mrs. Ruth Talbot played an organ medley of favorite hymns. Dale Bliss sang a solo. Closing song was by the choir, and closing prayer was by Harold Morris. Burial was in the Hinckley Cemetery, by Nickle mortuary. The grave was dedicated by Patriarch Charles Woodbury. Pall bearers were the high priests. |
