Notes: On 30 Nov 1918, Peter John Miller and Evelyn Mae Baldwin were married in
an evening ceremony performed at 18 Bryant Street, Rahway, Union, New
Jersey. The two witnesses present were Elizabeth Fax and William
T. Gillis. It may have been the home of the pastor of the First
Baptist Church, G. Merrill, who performed the wedding ceremony.
They are pictured at left about three months before their marriage. Their first son, John Leslie (Jack), was born in August 1919, and was baptized in the First Presbyterian Church of Perth Amboy. In the 1920 U.S. census, Peter J. Miller, 20, and Evelyn, 23, with their son John, 4 months, were living at 228 Sherman Road, Perth Amboy, Ward 4, Middlesex, New Jersey. Pete was a bookkeeper for a bank. Also living with them were Chris Miller, 55, his wife Anna, 53, and son August, 16, all born in Denmark. Chris was a carpenter and August was a clerk. In 1921 their second son, Robert Alfred was born, followed by a daughter, Frances Dorthea, born in 1923, son Alfred Lincoln, 1926, and son Wilfred Baldwin, 1929. All but one of the children were born in Perth Amboy. In 1922, Pete and Evelyn were members of the First Presbyterian Church, Perth Amboy, living in South Plainfield. At some time they changed their membership to the South Plainfield Baptist Church. In the 1930 U.S. census, Peter J. Miller, 31, is listed as an inmate in the U.S. Federal Penitentiary, in South Bend District, Fulton, Georgia. The reason is currently unknown. Evelyn Miller, 33, was renting a home nearby at 220 N. Farrington, Atlanta, Fulton, Georgia. The children were Jack, 10, Robert, 8, Frances, 6, Alfred, 4, and Wilfred, 10 months. The family returned to New Jersey, and in January 1931, were readmitted to the First Presbyterian Church in Perth Amboy. Their address was 205 Patterson Street, Perth Amboy. The 1931 Perth Amboy City Directory lists Peter as a credit manager for Reynolds Bros Inc. For some period of time, Pete had a print shop in Perth Amboy named the Raritan Letter Shop. On 5 Oct 1935, during the depression, the family sold their possessions and left New Jersey. They traveled by car to California via the Southern route. They settled in what is now Rosemead, Los Angeles County. In 1939 their address was 2912 Stevens Avenue, Wilmar. Their last child, Ruth Jean was born here. It was in the fall of 1939 that their son Jack hitchhiked from Wilmar to Perth Amboy, NJ, sending back postcards on his journey. In the 1940 U.S. census, Peter J. Miller, 41, and Evelyn, 43, were listed at 2912 Stevens St., San Gabriel Twp., Los Angeles, County. Both had completed 8th grade, and Pete was an accountant for a drug store, earning &1,680. They owned their home, valued at $2,500. The children were Jack, 20, 4 years high school, a brick mason apprentice, income $320; Robert, 18, 4 years high school; Frances, 16, 2 years high school; Alfred, 14, 1 year high school; Wilfred, 10, 5th grade; and Ruth J., 3 months. In December 1942, Pete and Evelyn returned to Perth Amboy with their young Ruth, age 3, to celebrate the 50th Wedding Anniversary of Pete's parents, Christian and Dorthea Miller. Pete returned immediately, but Evelyn and daughter stayed a few weeks to visit her mother, Frances Baldwin, in Rahway, New Jersey. In April 1945, the family was notified by telegram that their son John L. Miller (Jack) had been killed in the Phillipine Islands on 12 Mar 1945 in a crash of his airplane. Buried originally in the Phillipines, his body was returned to the United states on 22 Sep 1948, where he was buried in Rose Hills Memorial Park. Pete and Evelyn received small monthly payments for their respective lifetimes from the National Service Life Insurance policy on Jack following his death. Pete and Evelyn moved many times as documented by the addresses on postcards they received. From 2912 Stevens Ave., Wilmar (1939 - 1941) to 1236 South Garfield Avenue, Alhambra (1943); then 633 Meridian Avenue, Alhambra (1945); to 920 South Manley Drive, San Gabriel (1948); and then 1821 South Atlantic Boulevard, Alhambra (1949). In the 1950 U.S. census, Peter J. Miller, 51, and Evelyn, 53, were living at 1821 S. Atlantic Blvd., Alhambra, Los Angeles, CA. Pete was the proprietor of his own paint store. Still at home was Wilfred B., 20, working as a clerk in the paint store, and Ruth Jean, 10. In 1951, Pete and Evelyn finally settled at 101 East Adams, Alhambra. It was here that they presided over the annual Christmas Eve family party, that gradually grew to include 18 grandchildren. Pete owned the Pete Miller Paint Company, located at 223 East Valley Blvd., Alhambra. They both were active in the First Presbyterian Church of Alhambra, with several of their children, and even grandchildren, married and baptized there. One of their major contributions to the church was the establishment of the Jack Miller Memorial Library, in memory of their son Jack. In 1958, Pete and Evelyn semi-retired and moved to the high desert. Evelyn had heard about Hesperia and had talked Pete into "taking a drive up to the hi-desert to see 'what all the shouting was about'". Hesperia was an old town, but in the early 1950's development for housing began with lots going for about $50.00. They bought two lots, and built houses on both, living in one. They also had a five acre "ranch" in Summit, which had its own well. Their last residence was 17681 Cajon Street, Hesperia, San Bernardino, California. Pete opened a new paint store in 1961, located at 16165 Main Street, Hesperia. Both Pete and Evelyn were active in the community, and in the Hesperia Congregational Church. Pete was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis. Evelyn was active in the Hesperia Federated Women's Club. Pete died of a heart attack on 19 Nov 1967 in Hesperia. Evelyn continued to live in the desert until June 1969, when she sold the house and returned to Alhambra. Here she took up residence at 1236 South Garfield Avenue. Her last residence was a rest home in Alhambra. She died 27 Feb 1983. Both are buried in the Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, in the Parkview Lawn section, with their son Jack lying between them. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
